What Web skills do employers want?

Many employers are looking for solid programming and networking skills and experience. The most common programming languages used by web people are HTML, JAVA, CGI w/Perl, JAVAScript. But larger employers may have a separate technical department for web design/development/maintenance -- these employers will often want their people to have traditional bachelors degrees in computer science.

What salary can an entry-level person expect?

According to Monster.com basic salaries for a Web Editor start at $49,431 per year and for the Web Master at $59,128 per year.

Why are there TWO different certificates?

The Web Site Support and Maintenance Certificate (28 cr.) prepares a person to focus on the support and the maintenance of the web sites.
The Advanced Web Site Development Certificate (41 cr.) is much more technical and sophisticated than the above. This certificate prepares a person to develop web pages, manage sites, and interface with the whole computer system of the company/client.
Both certificates are designed for the development of occupational skills which are required by the marketplace. They are not for the casual hobbyist who isn't willing to work hard.

What is the profile of the typical student in this program?

The student population varies greatly in age, gender, nationality, and occupational/educational background. Many have a background in computers, but not all. There are numerous certificate candidates, but many students just pick and choose the classes they want with no particular curriculum in mind.

The Web Programming certificate program has been recently updated. The following classed were added as part of the certificate: WWW 181 Client Scripting (JavaScript) and WWW 220 Active Sever Pages(ASP.NET).

If the certificate requirements in the catalog say, for example, that 28 credit hours are required for a certificate, is that all that I have to take ?

That depends on your background. However, most of the required classes have prerequisites that you will have to satisfy in addition to the courses required for the certificate.

Yes. There are more evening and weekend classes than day.
Some classes are never offered during the day.
See Credit Class Schedule for more infornation on classes days and times.

Are there any courses that are only offered once a year? If so, when are they offered?

All the certificate classes are offered both fall and spring semesters.
WWW 101, 111, and 131 are also offered in the summer.

Can an experienced adult student proficiency out of some of the major courses?

No, but you may be able to substitute; see coordinator for more details.

Do any of the tool courses typically transfer into 4-year programs?
Any particular 4-year schools you would recommend or warn against?

Lewis University offers a bachelor's degree in computer network administration;
The University of Illinois at Chicago offers E-Business and E-commerce certificate programs;
IIT offers numerous certificate programs.
Columbia and Marquette are beginning to dabble in this area.
Many community colleges are offering these types of courses through their continuing education programs.

Are there any courses that are good to take together, or to avoid taking together?

Avoid taking 2 advanced classes together.
It's OK to take WWW 111 & 131 together if you already have a fair amount of Internet experience.
Just experience in surfing the Internet will not give a student enough knowledge to skip WWW 111.
You should not take WWW 171 and 210 together--take 171 first, then 210.

Can you describe some of your most popular courses?

WWW 101: Designed for the novice who wants an introduction to the Internet. Available on line.

WWW 111: Covers copyright issues, FTP instruction, Internet organization and development, Telnet, encryption and security issues.
Specifically designed for people who want to go on to WWW 131, Building Web Pages.

WWW 131: Teaches how to develop a web page using HTML.

WWW 290: Special topics classes, offering a wide range of different topics.
These have been designed for students with a more personal interest in web pages, not occupational.

Do I have to take WWW 111 before I take WWW 131?

WWW 111 is a prerequisite. It is strongly recommended for WWW 131.
However, if you have Internet experience, you can take both classes at the same time.

I have Internet experience--do I have to take WWW 111?

WWW 111 is required in the certificate programs. You must earn the number of college credit hours specified in the college catalog to earn a college certificate. In rare cases, the Coordinator may approve enrollment in a more advanced class to substitute for the credit hours required for WWW 111.

Are there any classes that should not be taken in the same term?

Avoid taking WWW171 and WWW210 together. WWW171 should be taken first.

When can I enroll in the WWW 210 Website Maintenance and Management class?

WWW 210 is set up as a capstone type of class to bring together the various aspects of the Web curriculum. This means it should be one of the very last courses you take in the certificate program.

What are courses that are acceptable as electives in the certificates?

See Web Certificate Electives Page
