How to do it
Step 1: Get and Install FTP Program
Download the WS_FTP LE here
You can download and use different ftp programs. A commonly used ftp program at Oakton is WS_FTP LE (Light Edition) that is available for free on the web site of the program developer Ipswitch. All the instructions below describe how to ftp using this program.
To install a program double click downloaded file and follow the installation directions on your screen.

Step 2: Run FTP Program
Please review the WS_FTP LE program interface screenshot below. Screenshot below is what you see when you run the program for the first time. To create a new connection profile click the Connect button.

Step 3: Create Profile/Connect to your H drive
After you click the Connect button you will get a Session Properties dialog box (see screenshot below) where you create a connection Profile. To create a profile you need your   server access info, which is:
Host Name/Address of the FTP Server - student.oakton.edu
UserID - your Oakton Username
Password - your Oakton password
After your new profile is created click Apply button to save a profile and click OK button to connect to Oakton.

Step 4: Transfer Files
Screenshot below shows WS_FTP interface when you are connected to your H drive at Oakton. On the left side of the interface you have your home computer C drive. On the right side of the interface you have your Oakton H drive.
To transfer files to school/home click the file you want to transfer and then click / button.
Example: Clicking the button with fruit.gif file selected on your home computer will transfer fruit.gif to your Oakton H drive folder open at the time. In this example it will be an H drive root directory.
Note: If you want the file to be available over the web it must be transferred to your Public.www folder.

Some additional info
Your Public.www directory
- All files that you put in your public.www directory on Oakton H drive are accessible from the internet. To access your public.www directory from the internet open browser and type the following address in the address bar: .
Note 1: The address you type is actually Host Name/Address of the FTP Server + your UserID that you used for your ftp connection.
Note 2: Do not put any sensitive information or files in your public.www folder. Remember they can be viewed or downloaded from the browser.

You can use these ftp instructions when you need to transfer files to/from any ftp server provided that you have your ftp server access info.
