Caring for Perennials

The Third Oakton Conference for Teaching Excellence (OCTE) - August 20, 2004
A faculty member since 1987, Marilee is Professor of English and Instructor in Sociology. She is a recipient of the Excellence Award from the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development and two Bright Idea awards from the Illinois Council of Community College Administrators. Along with four other colleagues, she co-authored and produced Teaching for Critical Thinking, the highly acclaimed seven part video series for PBS.

For the last three years Marilee has served as faculty development coordinator for teaching and learning. Prior to that she co-led with Bill Taylor a host of faculty development seminars dealing with critical thinking, study strategies, and classroom assessment. Also during this tiime she and Bill led the New Faculty Orientation seminar, helping newly hired full time faculty transition into the college culture.

Marilee is also co-coordinator of the Reading Program and co-coordinator of the Women’s Institute. In addition to these responsibilities, she is working with Apollo Elementary School to further advance a partnership between Oakton and Apollo in addressing educational needs and opportunities in the area of reading. Most recently, she has been team teaching in Fast Track, a new accelerated program for adult learners.
